It’s important to take good care of your skin, so the new year is a great time to think about upgrading or changing your skincare routine while still taking care of Mother Earth in return.  But how can we all do our part? New year, new routine! It's time to change your beauty ritual by making sure your skin is getting skin care that fits its needs, or by adding new steps to your routine! Cleansing your skin is an essential part of your routine, but while taking care of your skin you can also help the planet by opting for the Solid Face Cleanser and Solid Face Scrub.

Don't forget to arm your skin against the effects of daily irritants, such as pollution and bad weather, with our Elixir Botanique line and its reinforced antipollution action ! Lastly, take time to do a mask once or twice a week to keep your skin deeply moisturized and looking radiantly healthy.
Looking toward healthier eating

We all know that having beautiful skin also comes from our diet. Eating a healthy balanced diet is the first step towards feeling great. Fill up on vitamins, eat vegetables (preferably organic) that are good for both your health and your skin! The pace of daily life can be pretty hectic, so it's important to cook your own meals and order less takeout with ingredients of unknown origin. In a nutshell, get cooking!
Make time for yourself

Learning how to let go is crucial. Taking a few moments for yourself is also part of our journey toward beautiful skin. This upcoming year, take time to apply purifying masks from our Pure Menthe line, make an appointment at an Yves Rocher beauty spa for a moment of wellness, or do some yoga!

It's vital to unplug and take breaks. You can achieve it by doing some exercises at home or at the gym, sitting back with a book, or enjoying a relaxing beauty treatment. Make time for well-being, your skin will thank you!
Recycle

Choose products with eco-designed packaging like our Bain de Nature line with its 100% recycled plastic bottles. Finally, remember to recycle – it's simple and anyone can do it.

So you see, it's possible to do something good for your skin and care for the planet at the same time!

A General Guide to Vegan Cosmetics

Discover Everything About Vegan Cosmetics. We Tell You All!

Have you heard about vegan cosmetics but weren't sure what it meant? Vegan, vegetarian...feeling a bit confused? Not to worry, we’ll explain everything!

Yves Rocher's mannequins

At Yves Rocher, our products are 100% vegetarian and more than 700 references are Vegan within our offer, across all product categories (skincare, hygiene, make-up, etc.). Yes, but vegan, vegetarian, what does that mean exactly?

What does it mean to be vegan?

It means following a diet called veganism that does not contain animal products or animal by-products (dairy, eggs, and even honey) coupled with a belief against animal cruelty and exploitation. Veganism is an actual lifestyle that reflects ethical choices made in daily life and involves a range of industries like cosmetics and fashion. To recap, being vegan means both following a vegan diet AND living a lifestyle that reflects the same values. For example, not buying leather or wool, not using cosmetics containing animal-derived ingredients like keratin or collagen, etc.

Yves Rocher's mannequins

What about Yves Rocher products?

100% vegetarian and more than 700 Vegan references within our offer, across all product categories Yves Rocher is a Brand that places plants at the heart of all its products. This is what has made its identity since its inception 60 years ago. All our products are designed from plants: we select from more than 1,100 ingredients of plant and natural origin studied by our scientific experts, those which are best suited to the cosmetic benefits of each product, which respect the integrity of the skin. and have a lower impact on the planet.

Our products can be considered 100% vegetarian and over 600 of our product formulas are Vegan, and contain no ingredients of animal origin.

On the other hand, when there is no satisfactory alternative, we allow ourselves certain natural ingredients from animal production whose harvest does not harm the integrity of the animals (natural secretions such as honey or beeswax) . These derivatives are used to contribute to the effectiveness of the formulas and to improve the sensory experience of the users. We are committed to offering our consumers vegan alternatives to make-up. That's why we released the Length and Volume mascara in 2021, which are vegan.

Yves Rocher's Concentrated Shower gel.

So what is the difference between vegan and vegetarian cosmetics?

A vegetarian cosmetic product is a product that does not contain any ingredient from the body of an animal (collagen, animal fats, etc.). A vegan cosmetic is a product that does not contain any ingredient derived from the body of an animal or animal production (eggs, milk, honey, beeswax, etc.) and which is free from animal exploitation.

Are there labels certifying vegan cosmetic products?

There are several vegan certification labels like those of the Vegan Society, PETA and One Voice. These labels certify either the Brand in its entirety or the product. The vast majority of labels do not issue certification to companies exporting to China because the Chinese authorities can decide, completely unilaterally, to themselves test cosmetic products regardless of the Brand before or during their marketing in their territory. Cruelty Free certification, on the other hand, attests to the absence of cruelty to animals, for example from animal testing. Remember that animal testing has been banned in Europe for cosmetic products since 2013.

Yves Rocher's landscape of Brittany.

Are there any regulations governing vegan cosmetics?

There are no regulations governing the designation "vegan" and therefore no regulatory definition of what a vegan product should be.

What about animal testing?

We stopped testing on animals in 1989. We do not test on animals and never endorse animal testing in our finished products or in their ingredients. And it’s not a new thing: the brand actually began fighting animal testing very early on. In 1989, Yves Rocher made a pioneering decision in the cosmetics industry to stop testing our finished products on animals and to replace the tests with alternative methods. In 1992, we won the Gold Medal from the SPA (Society for the Protection of Animals in France) for this initiative.

So now the mystery behind that popular word ‘vegan’ is solved!

How do you Choose Makeup Brushes?

Follow this guide to know which brushes to use for every part of your face.

There are so many brushes out there and choosing the right one to apply your makeup can become a headache. Follow this guide to know which brushes to use for every part of your face.

makeup brushes in different sizes and for different uses by Yves Rocher

I. Foundation Brushes for a Smooth and Flawless Complexion

1. For your Foundation

When applying a cream or liquid foundation, we need:  Either a large flat brush that's round on the end (Foundation brush) and will blend everything together without leaving lines. Its bristles and shape help you easily blend the product onto your skin for an even complexion!

How to use? Place some foundation on your hand, on the brush or directly onto your face. Put some of the product onto the center of the face and blend it outwards in a back-and-forth movement, remembering to spread it to the hairline, the neck and around the nostrils to make sure that there are no lines.

Another option is to use a Foundation Sponge, which is the ideal accessory to apply foundation and liquid or cream concealers. Its pointed tip means you can be precise in your application: dark circles, around the nostrils... The rounded end perfectly evens out your complexion for a natural and adjustable look.

How to use? Lightly wet your Foundation Sponge and dry it with a clean cloth. Place a small amount of product on the sponge or directly onto your face. Apply your foundation or concealer by dabbing with the sponge. The pointed end allows you to apply your concealer with precision while the curved side evens out your foundation.

2. For your anti-dark circle product/concealer

The Concealer brush is your best friend to apply stick or liquid concealer or anti-dark circle products. Its dense and rounded shape is perfect for an even and ultra-price application: dark circles, redness and any other blemishes are covered to give your makeup a flawless finish.

How to use?  Place the product on the areas you wish to cover, such as the dark circles under your eyes. Blend from the inner to outer corner of your eye area in a back-and-forth motion. Dab with the tip of the brush to blend everything.

Our tip: You can use this brush with our Yves Rocher liquid or stick concealer.

3.  For the Loose or Compact Powder

The Powder Brush is perfect for applying both compact and loose powders. Its rounded shape helps to lightly apply your powder and fix your makeup.

How to use? Simply take some powder, apply it to the whole face in a gentle circular motion, focusing on the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin).

4. For Blush and Highlighter

To highlight your cheekbones and contour your face, use the Blush Brush to apply blush, bronzer or highlighter.
Suitable for cream or powder textures, its tapered shape perfectly fits into the hollow of your cheeks for easy and precise application.

How to use? Take some blush and apply it to the high points of your cheeks blending it up to the temples.

Our tip: Change up the shade you use depending on your mood with our blush shades.
You can also use this brush with our Yves Rocher Bronzing Powder for a guaranteed instant contoured effect!

II. Eye Makeup Brushes to Define and Enhance your Eyes.

1. For Eyeshadow

The Eyeshadow Brush is ideal to apply both cream and powder eyeshadows. Its form and bristles are designed to collect just the right amount of shadow and ensure easy and pigmented application - for an ultra-intense result!
How to use it Take and apply the eyeshadow from the inner corner of the eye outwards.
Our tip: Change up your looks using the many shades of eyeshadow and palette from our product lines.

2. For the Crease of your Eyelid

The Eyelid Crease Brush has a long and rounded shape that allows you to easily blend your eyeshadows - for an intense and precise result.

How to use? After having taken some of your eyeshadow, apply it using back-and-forth movements along the crease of your eyelid, then blend the eyeshadow up to the eyebrow without adding any more product.

3. For the Eyeliner

The Liner Brush is perfect to easily and precisely apply your liner along your lash line.
Suitable for powder, cream or liquid textures, its very fine tapered tip allows the product to be applied with a high level of precision.

How to use? Apply the product from the inner corner of the eye towards the center of the eyelid. Then go from the outer corner to join up the line at the center of the eyelid. To elongate your eyes, you can also extend the line past the outer corner to create a small flick. If you're feeling creative, let your imagination run wild with graphic eyeliner designs in more vibrant colors.

Our tip: This brush can be used with our eyeshadows and eye pencils.

What if you could only choose 2 or 3 brushes?

We know your makeup bag is already pretty full! So go for the Eyeshadow brush, the Foundation Brush to apply your foundation with no marks or lines, and the powder brush for all your bronzing powders, blushes and highlighters.

Our Commitments

All of our brushes are eco-designed in FSC-certified packaging, with a handle made of wood sourced from sustainably managed forests. For a more comfortable application and a product that lasts longer, the bristles of the brushes are 100% synthetic and are therefore vegan. The ink used on our packaging is made from plants.

To ensure your brushes remain effective, remember to regularly clean them and leave them out to dry. Remember to clean your Foundation Sponge after each use and leave it out to dry.

Is blue light harmful for your skin?

Find out how you can protect yourself from its effects on your skin!

We all know about UV rays (ultra-violet) and their effects on the skin. However, we know less about their close cousin, blue light. We have all the answers.

Blue light is the light emitted by the screens on our electronic and digital devices. Some studies have shown that we are spending up to six hours in front of the screen! Naturally, scientists took an interest in this universally known light and how it affects our body.

How does blue light affect our skin?

The most well-known effects are those on the eyes and the brain. Blue light is picked up by specific ophthalmic receptors that send an awakening message to the brain. From there, problems with concentration, attention, and falling asleep arise.

The skin is also affected, as it too is equipped with light-sensitive receptors. It was recently proven that this blue light, which is concentrated in energy, can alter certain functions in the depths of the skin, leading to accelerated aging, changes at the cellular level, and changes to the DNA in the nucleus.

Combined with other intrinsic and external factors, this change in skin cell function can have an impact on the skin’s quality, such as a dull complexion, for example.

Why should you protect yourself against blue light?

Unlike UV rays, where sunburn alerts you to excessive exposure (even if some biological damage has already been done), blue light causes no effects indicating changes to the skin. It’s an invisible aggressor that, in addition to other environmental stressors, can lead to oxidative and cellular damage, which cause accelerated skin aging.

So you should protect yourself all the more!

How can you protect yourself?

The active plant ingredient in our Elixir Jeunesse range, ultra-concentrated Aphloia Extract, will protect the skin against harmful oxidative effects:

- In-depth* : both at the level of the fibroblasts, which synthesize collagen (the skin’s youth protein), and at the level of the extracellular matrix to ensure good plasticity of skin tissue.

- On the surface* : ultra-concentrated Aphloia Extract will also protect keratinocytes, which are essential for a solid skin barrier. This effect on the skin’s barrier function is crucial in helping the skin fight the harmful effects of weather and environmental pollution.

Ultra-concentrated Aphloia Extract protects and repairs the skin, allowing it to remain radiant and youthful during the intense conditions of everyday life.

*These effects have been proven, in vitro, specifically in relation to damage linked to exposure to blue light.

In a nutshell, Blue Light...

- Is invisible and its effects cannot be seen with the naked eye

- Is penetrating and powerful

- It exposure is continuously increasing

- It is now considered a daily environmental stressor, with individuals being exposed to it more than six hours per day

- Protecting the skin is essential in order to fight against environmental stress-related aging

- Ultra-concentrated Aphloia Extractprotects the skin against the harmful effects of blue light deep within the skin

So are you aware of the damage blue light can do? Are you trying to do something about it?

A trip to La Gacilly

Follow us on our journey to Yves Rocher's Homeland!

Follow us on a journey to the village of La Gacilly, where the Yves Rocher brand has been for nearly 60 years, and visit milestones in its history along the way.

Yves Rocher and his self-named brand were both born in a little village in Brittany called La Gacilly with a population of 3,000 people. This small town between Rennes and Vannes is not only where he began his life and venture, but also where over 350,000 visitors are now welcomed every year. Follow us on a journey to the village of La Gacilly, where the Yves Rocher brand has been for nearly 60 years. Right this way!

The Amazing Yves Rocher Botanical Garden

Founded in 1977, the Botanical Garden in La Gacilly stretches over 2 hectares of land. It is actually an open-air laboratory where more than 1,500 species are evolving under the watchful eyes of the Horticulture and Botany team. This is where, among other specimens, it keeps its ethnobotanical and tropical collections, national artemisia collection, scented pelargonium, plants used in cosmetics and perfumes, arboretum, and bamboo grove.

The breathtaking garden is open to the public and is also home to rare and endangered species. It serves as a great source of inspiration for the Yves Rocher Botanical Beauty® researchers.

Eight signature plants grown using sustainable farming practices

Sixty years and almost 60 hectares of flowers growing in La Gacilly! It's an even more impressive number considering that the entire farm is Certified Organic and only sustainable agriculture practices are used. Our botanists and agriculturalists observe and study nature to grow our eight signature botanicals in harmony with the plants: German chamomile, Roman chamomile, arnica, calendula, cornflower, mallow, edulis, and glacier lettuce.

They also maintain and even improve the health of the soil, ecosystems and people – and this balance makes our plants stronger! These eight signature plants are used in over 30% of our formulas.

Yves Rocher production sites: Made in Brittany

The story begins in 1959 when Yves Rocher made his first moisturizer in his family’s attic with lesser celandine. Sixty years later, his products are still Made in France or, more precisely, Made in Brittany since three production sites were built a few miles from each other in the area. The first was in Croix-des-Archers (La Gacilly) and then came one in Rieux for makeup and Ploërmel for perfume. Yves Rocher, a visionary and businessman, actively worked to develop industry in the area by creating jobs in his native region.

There are now over 2,700 employees working in Brittany and more than 350 million Made in Brittany products, or 80% of the brand’s production. All of the Brittany industrial sites have also been certified as Biodiversity Refuges by the LPO (French Bird Protection League).

La Gacilly: a heaven for biodiversity

Visiting La Gacilly and Yves Rocher's region is a unique experience, a chance to bond with nature. In fact, all of the Yves Rocher industrial sites are Biodiversity Refuges. And that’s not all because Yves Rocher has also partnered with the LPO (French Bird Protection League) to protect and leverage its natural heritage in La Gacilly.

When you go to his birthplace in La Gacilly, you discover how much work and dedication Yves Rocher put into plants and the wellbeing of animals, which he advocated for all his life. It’s a unique experience of total immersion in this little village nestled in the heart of Brittany. The Yves Rocher brand also has an eco-hotel surrounded by nature.

La Grée des Landes Eco-Hotel and Spa

Now it's possible to live in harmony with nature. Yves Rocher’s son Jacques dreamed up an ecological hotel in the heart of the natural world on 10 hectares of the countryside. The idea behind this veritable oasis of tranquility is simple: to share the same habitat with plants and animals without disturbing them.

The entire facility seamlessly blends into the landscape and everything was designed to be sustainable, from the rooms and the cabin nestled among the centuries-old cypress trees to the three secluded botanical suites on the estate and the spa and wellness center. The hotel also has an organic farm-to-table restaurant called Les Jardins Sauvages that sources products from local growers and its own kitchen garden.

Come to the Spa for a taste of Natural Slow Life to recharge before enjoying a walk through the nearby forest or exploring the village during the La Gacilly Photography Festival!

La Gacilly Photography Festival

The La Gacilly Photography Festival began in 2004 and has since adorned the walls, gardens and house facades in La Gacilly for one of Europe's largest outdoor photo expositions.

The art event is mainly sponsored by Yves Rocher and has been an original way of raising public awareness about environmental issues. In 2017, it brought nearly 400,000 people to La Gacilly who come to visit the village and see the photographs on display. Learn all the details about the La Gacilly Photography Festival.

Maison Yves Rocher

Opened in September 2017, Maison Yves Rocher offers an immersive 45-minute museum tour through five multi-sensory worlds that transport visitors inside the brand itself. Walk into eye-opening scenes that recount the amazing story of a nature-lover and visionary from Brittany as he turns an innate sense into a global cosmetics brand.

Located right in the village, Maison Yves Rocher also houses the Le Végétarium restaurant, full of natural products and good cheer, and the Yves Rocher Boutique & Institute.

Anti-aging & anti-wrinkle: which is best for me

When should you be using them? We demystify it all for you!

In the cosmetics world, anti-aging and wrinkle products are universally known and extremely common. But what are they actually used for? How do they differ? And when should you use them?

What's the difference between anti-aging and anti-wrinkle products?

The names might sound similar, but they work in different ways.

Wrinkle products are highly targeted. Like the name suggests, they treat and smooth out wrinkles that have already formed on your face, like frown lines and crow's feet, in terms of appearance.

Anti-aging skincare is more comprehensive than anti-wrinkle products and has a more global action because it also addresses issues like firmness, age spots, and a dull complexion. Anti-aging creams are enriched with hydrating, nourishing and antioxidant ingredients, plus they limit the so-called “oxidative” stress caused by everyday life (pollution, smoking, sun, etc.). They act like a defense shield against environmental damages.

Which skincare is best for my skin type?

The condition of your skin constantly changes throughout your life. The recommendation for the best way to prevent cutaneous aging is to start using specialized skincare as early as possible and, most importantly, to establish good habits. Turn back the clock with a balanced lifestyle and diet, regular exercise, and of course a beauty routine and basic daily rituals that minimize the skin’s aging process.

Even before thinking about choosing an anti-aging treatment, it's important to follow a few simple rules: always wash your skin and keep it well hydrated. This golden rule applies at any age and helps to keep your skin in great condition.

In your 20s, your skin is still producing enough collagen so there’s no need to use an anti-aging treatment. But you can slowly begin adding an eye cream to your routine.

The first wrinkles

As your skin starts producing less collagen, a few expression lines may make an appearance. No big deal. The advice is to get a wrinkle treatment twice a year and keep making sure your skin is really well hydrated, for example with the Sérum Végétal or Elixir Jeunesse lines.

What distinguishes a mature skin?

A “mature” skin has more pronounced wrinkles and less elasticity, so it may be reason to use an anti-aging product morning and night. And you can start regularly using an anti-aging product. For example, the Anti-Age Global range can be a good choice because it rejuvenates and firms up the skin, plus it corrects all signs of aging.*

*In terms of appearance.

And then what happens to my skin?

Then, when your skin is generating less and less sebum and gets thinner, the epidermis doesn’t renew itself as quickly, and the skin becomes weaker. This is when an anti-aging products can be used all the time while still keeping your skin well hydrated. The Riche Crème line is ideal for this because its active botanical ingredient is made of 30 precious oils.

In a nutshell, anti-aging and anti-wrinkle products can be used gradually based on the condition of your skin because we don’t necessarily have the same signs at the same age. They have to be clearly distinguished and applied according to your skin's specific needs. Scientific advances are now resulting in highly effective serums and creams that are specially made for different skin types. Pick the one that’s best for you!

Now that you know how to choose the best skincare for you, are you leaning more toward an anti-aging or a anti-wrinkle product? Let us know in the comments!

A path to a beautiful you

Does yoga make you beautiful? Absolutely! No doubt about it! Your body is in motion, it heats up and blood circulates everywhere, which helps with cell renewal. You sweat and some of the toxins in your body are flushed out through your pores, which brings oxygen to your skin.

Hold this position for five seconds, then push the air over to your right cheek. Hold for five seconds. Repeat on the left side, then the upper lip and the lower lip.

Tone cheeks and neck: push your chin forward. Put your upper lip over your lower lip. Try to smile and lift your chin to the ceiling. It's totally normal if it makes you laugh! Hold this position for 10 seconds.

Pratiqués régulièrement, les cours de yoga sont comme une cure de jouvence pour votre corps, votre esprit et votre peau, alors n'hésitez plus !

Don't wait another minute! Taking regular yoga classes is like a fountain of youth for your body, mind and skin!

Grand Rouge Mat: Behind the Scenes

We're inviting you behind the scenes to learn how we created the Grand Rouge Mat

Learn about the three years our labs spent developing this super challenging product. The result is a matte lipstick that doesn't dry out and really delivers in terms of color and matte effect.

What was the challenge? The goal was a long-wearing matte finish lipstick that goes on comfortably and has a non-drying texture. All of this and it couldn’t contain any silicone or cochineal carmine, plus it had to have a high content of natural ingredients.

To achieve color and coverage, we used a higher percentage of pigments than our regular lipsticks.

We chose the regenerative camellia oil – our favorite active ingredient – to ensure comfort.

We quickly realized that it's very hard to combine a matte effect with comfort. You’ve probably already noticed, but matte products are usually very dry and those that aren’t do not deliver a totally matte look...

Determined not to compromise, we continued our research.

Step 1: Selecting the least shiny raw materials and least drying powders.

We ran into many problems, one of which was cleaning the molds. Matte actually means making a formula packed with powder and pigment, which makes it a lot stickier. We had to test out a number of cleaning products before realizing that an ordinary washing machine for clothes was the best solution.

After three years of work, we have a lipstick we are proud of. It took us some time, but we did it for the pleasure of your lovely smile.

Now that everything works like a charm, here is the final recipe:

1/

Mixing the pigments

2/

The machine makes the pigmented matter smooth

3/

Adding the pigments to the remaining ingredients, which includes the regenerating camellia oil

4/

Pourring it into a mold and letting it chill for 10 minutes!

Then the process is scaled up at the plant. Your lipstick goes through many different assembly machines before it winds up in your purse!

And don't be surprised at how light the packaging is because we made sure not to use any metal – and that makes Mother Nature happy.

Have you tried our Grand Rouge Mat lipsticks? Which colors are your faves?

Anti-Aging Foods

Learn about the best food to help protect and extend your skin’s youth!

Do you know about anti-aging foods? Here's a list of them that help protect and extend your skin’s youth, plus some ideas for delectable recipes you can savor to your heart’s content!

Antioxidants

We hear a lot about them, but what are they?

Antioxidants are your weapon against free radicals that cause skin to become less firm and supple. Your body produces them naturally, but we're sorry to say not enough to fend off the signs of aging. Don’t panic! You can kick-start production through your diet!

Here’s a quick overview of antioxidant foods you can eat to help keep your skin supple!

The Vitamin Force

Vitamins are the antioxidant heroes and the most well known.

Vitamin A to help cell regeneration. It boosts collagen and is found in sweet potatoes, red peppers, avocados and broccoli.

Vitamin C stimulates collagen synthesis as it fights free radicals to make skin firmer and more radiant. Long live black currants, kiwi fruits, grapefruits, oranges and clementines!

The power trio of vitamin A, C, and E naturally help defend your skin against dangerous UVB rays. Vitamin E can be found in sunflower oil, almonds (nuts), salmon and eggs.

These vitamins are essential for keeping your skin beautiful and supple. They're a real anti-aging cocktail!

The Polyphenols Force

These plant molecules are antioxidants that also boast anti-inflammatory powers. Where can you find them? In grapes and red fruits like strawberries and raspberries, as well as in tea and chocolate! For example, berries are rich in polyphenols (and therefore antioxidants) and help slow down the appearance of wrinkles.

Remember: Prioritize fresh, seasonal and organic so you can take full advantage of the nutrients and anti-aging benefits of these foods!

The Zinc and Selenium Duo

Also a member of the antioxidant family, this pair helps the body battle oxidative stress!

Foods highest in selenium are mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, fish and seafood. It helps repair DNA damage.

Zinc is found in seafood as well, but also in whole grain bread, egg yolks and beef. In addition to its antioxidant power, it helps wounds heal and aids with skin disorders like psoriasis.

Recipe ideas for filling up on antioxidants!

Ease into breakfast

Plain oatmeal doesn’t sound very appetizing, does it? Add a few goji berries and cranberries, some walnuts for the vitamin E and a tablespoon of flax seeds to moisturize and firm up your skin. On the side, have a little almond milk and green tea lightly sweetened with some agave syrup!

What's for lunch?

Tomatoes, of course. They're rich in vitamin C, E and beta carotene. Have them with some mozzarella cheese. Then get a dose of vitamin C (and B!): chicken with peppers and garlic. In the mood for some polyphenols? Well then, top off the meal with a few berries!

No-fuss dinner

It's easier for the body to absorb the antioxidants in salad greens if they are eaten with some oil – olive oil, for example! Scrambled eggs and a little broccoli for the vitamin E and a slice of smoked salmon. And not only is a half container of raspberries a nice treat full of vitamin C, it's also good for the skin because it delivers the nutrients it needs to stay firm and radiant!

What you need to know about alcohol in cosmetics

What is it used for, why using it... and what about Yves Rocher's formulas?

Ever wonder why is alcohol used in cosmetics? We have all the answers!

Alcool, Ethanol, Ethyl Alcohol… What is it all about?

Alcohol is an ingredient that you often see in cosmetics, and you're probably wondering where it comes from. Well, hold on to your hats because the alcohol in Yves Rocher products is produced exclusively by fermentation and distillation of beets!

In your beauty products, it's called ethanol or ethyl alcohol (labeled as “alcohol”) and we use it for a variety of reasons!

Why is it used in cosmetics?

Alcohol is considered to be "volatile", which means that it quickly evaporates after you apply it, and it makes the formulas work better because it "carries" the active ingredients. That is also why you get that great refreshing feeling (that we love!) when you put on deodorant.

You may already know that water is one of the most commonly used solvent is cosmetics, but it’s not the only one! Alcohol can extract or dissolve certain substances. For example, it's used in perfumes.

Alcohol has the property of  "de-lipidation" which is great for oily skin because it eliminates the excess sebum that collects on the skin’s surface.

Don't to confuse with fatty alcohols

Perhaps you’ve read names like behenyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol or benzyl alcohol on the back of your products and thought it was the same as ethanol. But think again! These are in fact close cousins called “fatty alcohols”! They are nothing like ethyl alcohol – totally different in appearance and properties. These non-toxic and non-irritant ingredients are beneficial for skincare and haircare. What's their super powers? They're film-forming, emollient, moisturizing, softening and protective.

Why do they have a bad reputation?

Depending on the type of skin, sometimes alcohol works “too well”! For example, its “degreasing” action can dry out or irritate sensitive or dry skin. Rest assured, it's not a instant irritant but it can become a nuisance for some skin types.

But don’t worry, the unwanted side effects can vary by the volume of alcohol and whether the formula contains calming or moisturizing agents (which can also partly or fully balance it out). It's all a matter of dosing and knowing how to formulate a product!

How does Yves Rocher use it in its products?

How does it work at Yves Rocher? We keep it very simple at Yves Rocher. To ensure perfect tolerance of our products, we don’t use any alcohol (or ethanol) in our formulas for sensitive skin and dry skin to avoid any risks of irritation!

Now that you know everything about how alcohol works in cosmetics, is it something you consider when choosing a product? Let us know in the comments!
